For The Record: Wonder Woman Is Not A Silicon-Enhanced Pornstar

I've seen a variety of images of Wonder Woman in various pornish situation on the Interwebs, and I've developed an aesthete about them: I like the ones where Wonder Woman actually LOOKS like Wonder Woman a lot more than I like the ones where she does not. Specifically, I don't like the ones where Wonder Woman looks like a pornstar who has never done a pushup in her life, who has bought a couple of gallons of silicon to bring her breasts up to ludicrous size. (See above.)

There are MANY such illustrations on the Web, and my problem with them is that they simply do not look like the buff fighting woman that Wonder Woman is supposed to be. I know, the basic idea is "Wouldn't it be great if Wonder Woman were naked, bound and (fill in the blank)?" But then the artist goes on to think, "And wouldn't it be great if Wonder Woman had huge breasts and a big ass, you know, a little meat on her bones, and big puffy lips and huge round eyes?" And that's where the artists screw up, because the resulting image doesn't LOOK like Wonder Woman, she looks like a stripper/pornstar wearing a Wonder Woman outfit. And that, as we all know, is Power Girl! And it AIN'T ... Wonder Woman!

What makes this phenomenon PARTICULARLY annoying is that Wonder Woman having a nice, big rack is canon. She's not one of those B-cup superheroines. She's always been portrayed as filling out her boustier nicely, in comics and on TV. (Linda Carter being the case in point, we will not speak of the Cathy Rigby Wonder Woman!)

But some guys want her to fill it out WAAAAY past normal, and frankly, the image at the top is far from the most extreme example I've seen. I suppose if you have a big breast fetish, by which I mean a ludicrously big breast fetish, you gotta make Wonder Woman look like she's smuggling basketballs in her boustier to make her seem sexy to you, but really, for most people, past a certain point breasts don't look sexy, they look deformed.

Plus, Wonder Woman is buff, she's an Amazon for cryin' out loud, she doesn't have a pencil neck or twiglike arms or (see above) tiny, tiny feet. She doesn't have excess fat on her hips or her butt. She doesn't necessarily have to look like a damn body builder, but at LEAST like a gymnast.

Wonder Woman True Romance Comics Was A Thing?

When my flying monkeys brought this article (Myth_Understood: Wonder Woman: Feminist Icon Or Exploitative Fantasy?) by Betaraysyr in I tabled it, thinking it might be useful but was probably just another bit of the Wonder Woman glurge that pops up on comics sites every so often.

I wish I had not tabled it, it's a good and interesting article that brought up a few new bits about the background of Wonder Woman that answered questions that have puzzled me.

For example, I had always wondered if Marston (Wonder Woman comics' creator and initially, writer) had really gotten away clean with ALL the out-there bondage imagery he put in Wonder Woman comics. I mean, he was RIGHT OUT THERE with it. Check out my article on Wonder Woman's bondage years if you don't believe me.

Well, turns out Marston didn't get away with it, according to Betaraysyr. The usual bluenoses and busybodies were "who'll think of the children?"-ing their asses off. They wrote letters to William Gaines, Wonder Woman's publisher, complaining about all the bondage. But Marston pulled the argument to authority on Gaines, saying that as a psychiatrist he knew the comics were not harmful with all the bondage. (Marston was right, of course, the amazing thing is that Gaines bought it, comics publishers being a uniformly churlish and dumb group, as a rule, though Gaines is considered an exception.)

The other interesting point, and I think the more interesting one, is why Wonder Woman's popularity declined so sharply after Marston died and DC got their grubby little hands on the writing end of it. Of course they immediately dumped all the bondage stuff, especially Transformation Island. But that should not have KILLED the comic, it was never a BONDAGE comic per se. If they had written halfway decent stories using the rich mythos Marston has created for Wonder Woman, it should have puttered right along.

Well, according to Betaraysyr, DC killed the popularity of Wonder Woman comics by trying to transform it into a romance comic, hoping to attract female readers while Somehow retaining its male readership. Well it didn't happen. Female readers did not pick up on Wonder Woman and male readers lost interest in droves. DC probably would have dropped the title entirely if Marston's terms for giving DC rights to publish the comic hadn't stipulated that the rights to the comic would revert to Marston's estate if they failed to publish four issues a year.

I have some doubts about Bataraysyr's claim here ... I did a lot of research for my article on Wonder Woman's Bondage Years and I never came across any such claim. If this HAD occurred, you'd think everybody would have mentioned it to explain Wonder Woman's slumping sales post-Marston. Yet none of the sources I looked at did. I LIKE Betaraysyr's explanation, it's so consistent with the combination of greed, sexism and stupidity that characterized comic book writers and publishers in the 1950s. But I have to doubt it.

Empowered Meets Wonder Woman

Captioning on my part would be gilding the lily. And I know better than that!
Permit me to introduce you to the work of GrouchoM, another Deviantart sort of guy (if that is indeed his real name!). His specialty is drawing artwork based on existing animated images and comics. He appears to be a big fan of Totally Spies, but he also does Teen Titans, Drew Saturday, Fantastic Four, various anime and manga ... he goes wherever his sense of humor leads him. His specialty is humorous captions, and as you can tell from this image, he's got a great feel for making his characters' speech exactly match the original, which greatly ramps up the humor. And he also has a nice way of ramping up the bondage and damsel in distress imagery in his art, though he stays within the confines of the original character (i.e., the costumes tend to stay on).

As you may know, I'm a big fan of Empowered and Wonder Woman, so this comic really pushes my buttons.

In this case, Empowered's bumbling foot-in-mouth geek girl style of speech perfectly fits the occasion as she gushes over Wonder Woman but manages to do so in a way that just might infuriate her. Great stuff, and there's plenty more like it on is DeviantArt gallery, so hustle on over there and get some laughs!

Great Bondage Comic Talent Discovered By Me!

So, a couple days ago I get a message from an acquaintance on a message board I frequent that said, "You ought to check this guy's art out, I think you'd really enjoy it." So I checked it out, mostly to be nice, because most of the time I get such recommendations it's for an artist who's basically mediocre but is pushing the recommender's buttons in all sort of ways. Which may not be the same buttons I have.

But after an hour so staring bug-eyed at topnotch artwork, wondering why the hell I'd never heard of Shiniez before, I posted to the guy and asked if I could publish the piece you see above. He was cool about it and so, here we are.

It's not JUST the quality of the artwork though. Shiniez has a white-hot focus on the lesbian bondage fantasy, not just from the viewpoint of the kinky sex, though he is absolutely spot-on there, but from the viewpoint of the character dynamics of the fantasy. You understand the attraction the highly kinky relationship has for the characters involved, which makes the sexual imagery much more powerful.

What I'm saying is, this guy is a major bondage art talent and you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to get your eyeballs over to his page and give it a look. And if you like it, damn, buy something of his, nothing like rewarding talent directly! This guy is freaking good. He's been at it for over a decade! (/grumbles) How did I miss all that bondage-y goodness for so long?

Wonder Woman Gets Sexy With The Bondage

Kinda looks like Raf is trying to go legit, and damn, looks like he has the talent to go any way he wants to go! Well, we'll keep this out little secret ...

Ball Gagged 3D Damsels in Distress Ahoy!

Obiviondid is an artist on deviantart.com, one who has a different approach than the ones I've already mentioned. He's no Poseur -- he modifies existing video game babes to transform them into bound and gagged damsels in distress. You'll see images of Morrigan, New Las Vegas, Bloodrayne, Final Fantasy, and whatever game Wonder Woman is in ... hell, look for yourself, I don't really follow video games.

It's not what it looks like and it's exactly what it looks like, both at the same time.
This is not a modern gay parody of romance comics. It's an actual humorous comic (the original meaning of "gay" had connotations of humor) from 1944, published by ... Marvel Comics.

Yes, here it is, the skeleton in Marvel's closet, a GAY skeleton.

Clearly the modern meaning of "gay" had not entered the popular lexicon in 1944. In the 1950s it probably would have been banned shitless by the Comics Code Authority (which didn't exist in 1944). This one slid right under the radar. But the artists (who were in all probably Jewish and New Yorkers and hence, if not personally gay, were about as subversive as gays) clearly knew what "gay" meant in the homosexual subculture, because that "swish" sound effect and the exhortation of one character to "blow harder" CANNOT be coincidences. Somebody was having fun seeing how much stuff they could shovel under the radar.

I have in my article on Wonder Woman and her competitors set forth the idea that comic book creators were able to slip a lot of stuff under the radar of the mainstream society in those days. And I think Marvel's "Gay Comics" is a pretty good demonstration of the general naivete about sex that ruled in the 1940s. It wasn't just about bondage ... it was about practically EVERYTHING concerning sex.

Well the old blogosphere has been roiling furiously because Tiffany Fallon, a model/actress and huge Wonder Woman fan, appeared on Playboy Magazine's February 2008 issue in a Wonder Woman costume made entirely of latex paint. Oh, the horrors! Oh, the shivering fantods! MSNBC online actually got wind of it and covered it ... think of it, a mainstream media organ actually noticing something they didn't get a press release from a big agency about! (DC Comics might have sent out a release, come to think of it.)

One overwrought blogger actually claimed the whole thing was a plot to discredit Hillary Clinton's Presidential bid!

Wonder Woman's Bondage Secrets

The Golden Age years of Wonder Woman comics, when it's creator William Marston had full control are just FREAKY. There's no other way to describe it. Lesbian bondage a-go-go! This is an actual panel from a Golden Age Wonder Woman comic, and there are MANY other similarly freaky panels from those days. Would NEVER have gotten past modern censors.

Practically everybody knows that in her early days, Wonder Woman was a major lesbian bondage babe. She was into the tying up. She was into the being tied up. And so were ALL the women on Paradise Island. No men to tie them up, so whatcha-gonna-do? Rather than just repeat this bit of rather stale news, I've written an article that digs deeper -- looks at how she became a lesbian bondagette, the conditions that let her creators get away with what is undoubtedly the most blatant lesbian bondage theme in the history of comics prior to the 1990s and maybe just plain ever. I also take a look at Wonder Woman's bondage competitors and wrote a treatment for story about a visit by Wonder Woman and Batman to Transformation Island (where Wonder Woman and her pals reform female criminals through the magic of loving domination and lots of chains.
