The 1934 version of Cleopatra was WAY ahead of all subsequent version of Cleopatra in terms of creating slavegirls that really looked like slavegirls -- half naked and in chains. The movie slid in just before the Hayes Code came along and fucked up American films for about 30 years. If things had gotten WILDER without the Hayes Code over that 30 years, there's no telling WHAT kind of really great bondage imagery we might have had.
