Rest In Peace, Betty Page

Betty Page died on December 11, 2008, after falling into a coma. I think she was a great woman, not just a sexy woman. She had the courage to do bondage modelling at a time when it was dangerous in ways that it just isn't now. She stood up to powerful politicians when they tried to push her around. She was a person whose courage was a natural result of her belief in herself.

I wrote this article about her in September 2007, explaining my feelings about her. It still rings true to my ears.

Betty Page and Monica Lewinsky:Birds of A Feather

Commentators on Betty Page sometimes say she had an innocent quality about her. I don't know that I agree with that. I think she probably understood why guys wanted her to pose in the nude, and while playing bondage games. She would have had to have been borderline retarded not to know what was going on there, and the historical record gives no indication that she was.

I think the reason a lot of people look at Page's photos and think "innocent" is that Page owned her sexuality. She was hot and sexy and she knew it, the thingsshe was doing when she posed were hot and sexy and she knew it and enjoyed it, and she was OK with it. It suited her just fine to be a woman whom men would happily photograph whether they had film in their cameras or not.

Page, by all accounts, wanted to be a movie star, but had absolutely no interest in politics. She absolutely did not seek out the role of national icon when she was called before the Kafauver Committee, a 1950s-era assortment of bluenoses determined to stem the rising tide of smut that was threatening to make America sexy. But that's what happened to her, and to her everlasting credit, she didn't wilt before all that official attention from 50s era asshole Estes Kefauver. He worked hard to get her to rat on her friends. But Page stood her ground and owned up to who she was and what she did. She was a lot stronger than any of the men who accused her. Page never claimed that she had been led, or seduced, or entrapped or enticed into her activities by some smooth-talking Lothario, she always accepted responsibility for her actions, which may well be part of the reason she's admired as well as lusted after.

Now, let's look at Monica Lewinsky. She was (and perhaps, is) a sexual adventurer, like Page, except that instead of modelling and posing and so forth, her adventuring was confined to thing itself, i.e., sex, something Page didn't do, so far as we know, and considering how many people have been very interested in knowing, it's probably fair to say, "something she didn't do, period."

There's no doubt Lewinsky was attracted to politics and political men, but there's considerable doubt as to whether or not she ever had any interest in becoming a sex celebrity before the fact. She was definitely interesting in fucking the President, but there's no evidence she wanted to be KNOWN for fucking the President. The deed itself might be all the reward she was looking for, and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, we can reasonably assume that she did not. Remember, she never SOUGHT for her affair to become public, she just ran off at the mouth to a "sympathetic" co-worker, the backstabber Linda Tripp, who promptly spread the news to some Repubican gnomes, and the rest is as disgusting a bit of American history as you could ever want to experience.

But like Page, Lewinsky was strong. She owned her sexuality. She never claimed that Clinton had seduced her or led her on. She had seduced him, deliberately, starting with her deliberate thong exposure and moving on to the oral sex.

I admire that. The pressure to say she had been sexually harrassed, used, seduced, etc., must have been tremendous. That disgusting gnome Ken Starr was surely working to get her to say what was most to the Republicans' political advantage, and what would have been to their advantage would have been for Lewinsky to say that Clinton had FORCED her to give him blowjobs, or at the very least, had awed/intimidated her into giving him one.

But she never did that. She stayed with the truth. She was strong. Like Betty Page was strong half a century ago.

I suspect that's why both women are remembered with a certain sneaking fondness. They were sexual adventurers, but they stood by all that was best about being a sexual adventurer -- they were sexy, bold and strong.

I also suspect that might partly explain the increased interest in Betty Page today. There's a certain echo effect between her and Lewinsky. And in a time dominated by Republican women who would never DARE do anything their men wouldn't approve of, like Laura Bush, or harridans who work through their men to obtain what they want, like Barbara Bush, we can use a few bold, daring, strong, adventurous women.

Bondagerotica Welcomes Hentai Revue

"I think she's warmed up properly now, master!"

Today Bondagerotica is updated with The Hentai Revue, a series of reviews of Japanese adult anime. Hentai are famous for tentacle sex, but there is a lot more bondage in them than tentacle sex. But it's not just the bondage and the tentacle sex. Hentai are also full of the strangest plots and the weirdest characters I've ever seen. I can generally tell where most American movies and TV shows are going, but hentai can still suprise me. Sometimes brilliant stories (Imma Youjo 4) sometimes brain-damaged but strangely fascinating stuff (Private Psycho Nurse) hentai have a way of keeping the old eyebrows raised while being raunchy as hell.

Outdoor Slave Punishment

"Well, I guess you CAN feel it when I do that!"

The What Should A Slavegirl Looks Like is updated today with a new page for the Image Analysis section called Outdoor Slave Punishment which I think would fit beautifully into any modern sword and sandal B movie. Hell, stick a toga on both women and it would fit well in any of the old Italian sword and sandal movies.

Pet Me!

"Oh, come on, pet me, not her! Look, I've got my shorts unbuttoned already and that's really hard to do with your hands tied behind your back, and I'm holding the gag in place with my mouth so it doesn't slip out or anything!"

Empowered Rocks!

The superheroine known as Empowered get no mercy from Adam Warren in his "Empowered" series. She gets tied up CONSTANTLY. Bondage fans get a very nice read, indeed.

Bondagerotica is updated with a review of Adam Warren's groundbreaking series of graphic novels about a bondage-prone, nudity-prone hottie of a superheroine, Empowered. Warren does a lot of very intelligent things in his Empowered stories, but mostly he's funny as hell. It's not just funny for a bondage-related comic, it's funny funny. A lot of people who aren't all that interested in bondage like Empowered. Those who ARE interested in bondage will absolutely love Empowered. Check out my review right here.

Strange Bedfellows

"Oh, you scarlet jezebel, surely you must fear the wrath of my mighty trunk now!"

One of the phenomena that I find most puzzling is that some bondage fans are socially conservative -- most amazingly, some bondage/DiD site WEBMASTERS are conservative. Not just conservative in terms of wanting the government to be kept small and unintrusive, but SOCIALLY conservative.

It puzzles me because one of the things I know about social conservatives (or religious conservatives as they are also called -- for almost all purposes, they're pretty much the same) is that if they ever got any serious political power they would proceed to lock up anyone who posted or consumed sexual bondage imagery.

You may reasonably argue that social conservatives had a great deal of political power under the Bush Administration, but I would respectfully disagree. If they had power, they didn't get a whole hell of a lot done with it. They got a few conservative Catholics (hence anti-abortion) judges appointed to the Supreme Court. They got some Federal money diverted to religious charity and educational programs. They got child porn thoroughly outlawed (I would argue that dislike of child molesters and child porn is so widely distributed in our society that you can hardly call it an issue that belongs to any political persuasion, but it's part of religious conservatives' agenda, so I'll give them that).

Other than that, not a whole hell of a lot got done for them. Abortion didn't get outlawed. Roe v. Wade hasn't been struck down ... yet, anyway. The wall between church and state remains intact, except for a few tiny cracks like the Federal funding for faith-based charities mentioned above). Homosexuals are allowed to run free. (OK, they're not yet free to marry, but this is a very recent social conservative battleground and maintaining the status quo on it hardly represents any kind of advance for religious conservatives -- it's more of a holding action.)

Most especially, in terms of censoring every kind of porn except child porn, the social conservatives have been very nearly complete failures. This is partly the result of the accident of history that is known as 911, because prior to 911 the religious conservative Attorney General John Ashcroft was readying a major anti-porn initiative, but then was forced to throw all of DoJ's resources into chasing down actual criminals rather than people who were just too sexy to be allowed to run free.

I'll concede that over the past eight years the social conservatives did a LITTLE more than break even in terms of their goals, but only a LITTLE more. They have had nothing like the power that, say, the mullahs hold in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia. The American social conservatives' wishes do not tend to become law as the mullahs do in their respective countries, but continue to be pretty much ignored.

That said, the Republican Party and most especially its social conservative wing has been solidly opposed to freedom of expression with regard to sexuality for many decades. They've been behind every major censorship initiative the federal government has taken, and quite a few that it hasn't. If there has been on certainty in politics over the last 70 years, it's that social conservatives love to censor and hate sexual imagery.

The social/religious conservatives hate VANILLA sexual imagery, hell, they hate SOFTCORE vanilla sexual imagery. You can IMAGINE how they feel about bondage imagery. (They hate hate HATE it.)

And if they had the kind of power that the mullahs have in their countries, you can be sure that every last bondage-related website webmaster in the country would be either out of business, in jail, or headed that way, along with every last sexually-oriented site webmaster.

So, being a bondage site webmaster and a social conservative are contradictory, to say the least. Basically, you're promoting the agenda of people whose agenda includes putting you in jail.

Un-fricking believable.
