Why Can't WE Have Commercials Like This?

THIS is bondage! And yet ... no reason it couldn't be FASHION bondage! Image source: Public Disgrace.com.
So, flying monkeys found an INCREDIBLE commercial for Axe body spray from France recently. A nice little update of the damsel in distress cliche for the era of 50 Shades of Grey. It's freaking hilarious, and sexy, too. But mostly, hilarious! I know that Axe commercials generally get the ladies at Jezebel.com in full twisty-panty mode, but damn, there was some wit and intelligence going on in that commercial. Keep chopping away, Axe!
Also, a bit of end-of-the-year silliness from the fashion industry, a survey of bondage-inspired fashions from 2012 entitled Fifty Shades Of 2012: Year Of The Bondage-Inspired Outfit on StarPulse.com, which proves conclusively that all a garment needs is black coloration and one or more straps to get labelled "bondage-inspired." Note that there are no fashions that involve anything being, well, um ... bound to anything else. Proof positive that the fashion industry knows diddly about bondage.

Many bondage ties you see on this site wouldn't work on a runway because with her legs tied to things, the model can't really walk. But it doesn't HAVE to be that way. This is the same model in the same bondage as at the top of the page, she's standing and can walk easily, because her legs aren't fettered. She wears a ring gag, a leather collar, a leash, a rope breast harness and her hands are tied. She's in bondage, and looks it! Why can't fashion designers come up with inspired ways of interpreting actual bondage gear and ties rather than putting black stripes on a shirt, or otherwise create completely lame designs? Is this the age of 50 Shades of Grey or not? Image source: Public Disgrace.com.
The slideshow features Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Krysten Ritter, Krysten Stewart, Lea Michelle, Carmen Electra, Katy Perry, Stacy Keibler, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton, Katie Price and of course, Madonna, none of whom is tied or bound or chained in any way. Frankly, for many of the images, if a fashion blog had not informed me that they were bondage-inspired outfits, I would have had no idea.
Here's a Pinterest board that the flying monkeys found that has actual bondage imagery, just to get the bad taste out of your mind. And of course, our image up top makes the point. Bondage be bondage, bitches!

Here's another bondage model, in what's practically a fashion runway scenario. She wears a rope harness, her hands are tied behind her back, and she is paraded before a crowd of seated individuals while wearing a delightful blue negligee. True, she has a handler showing her around, but that could work in a runway environment very well, and is not needed anyway. Of course, no reason designers should restrict themselves to rope or exactly copy shibari harness rigs ... but they can do a LOT more to be bondage-y than they do. Image source: Public Disgrace.com.

Caged Fashion Slaves Bondage Fail
"When I begged and pleaded to be let out of my cage this is not what I had in mind. But it'll do."
So, my flying monkeys brought is a story about a fashion show in Germany in which some of the models posed in a roomy giant birdcage sort of thing. It's easy to see why they brought it in, the story was headlined "Caged Fashion Slaves!"
Looking at the image of the model sitting comfortably in a cage about the size of your average office cubicle dressed in clothing that would be completely ordinary in your average office cubicle, I at first thought the image was too lame to bother with, but kept it around because it WASN'T about 50 Shades of Gray, and how often does that happen lately?
Then I read the copy that ran with the article and it consisted of a bunch of nattering about whether the cage was really about bondage or not, etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda "Not really bondage" etc. It was SO FREAKING STUPID! The fashion show imagery was not bondage, it was WEAKSAUCE! The image at the top of this page ... THAT'S bondage, you stupid fucking fashion dumbasses.
I know rationally that they were just playing up the bondage imagery because there was nothing else going on in the show to make it interesting, and the protests were probably squealed in delighted tones rather than serious objections. But damn, that sort of stuff is tiresome.

"Secretary" the Movie Inspires Office Fashion Show
A fashion show for office wear with a theme based on the movie "Secretary" has done something remarkable: REAL bondage was used in the show! (Do visit the link, there are more and larger images than the reference image I've put up here.)
As I noted in my post on a celebrity blog's "Hottest Bondage Babe" contest, most fashionistas, when they use the word "bondage" are only referring to a garment or accessory that is black and has straps, be it shoes, purse or dress. Nothing has to actually be tied to anything.
But in this show, we have women actually tied to things, and one of them wearing an actual piece of bondage gear, i.e., the neck yoke with collar and cuffs seen in "Secretary."
But ... is this REALLY a coincidence? Or is something deeper at play?
Imagine a fashion designer, i.e., Kate Sylvester of New Zealand, who presumably creates or at least aspires to create totally off-the-wall party dresses for the wives of her country's economic overclass (the ones who control most of the wealth, i.e., the 1 percent here in the US) and she's tasked with creating a line of, of all things ... office wear!
Well of COURSE the designer's thoughts as she considered office wear would reflect her true feelings on the matter (and that of her customers as well) and so, with the unconscious political honesty that is often characteristic of people who think they are outside politics or beyond politics, the theme of SLAVERY and BONDAGE pops up, and eventually, the movie "Secretary" with its story of bondage in an office environment, becomes the perfect and natural expression of her theme! Voila!

Wrist Ankle Bondage Gets Fashionable

Writhing down the runway ... the new trend in fashion presentations!
Well, if you asked me what I thought would be the VERY LAST bondage technique to be adopted by the fashion industry, I would of course have said "hogties." And it’s true that no hogties have showed up in fashion shows that I know of. But hot on the heels of hogties in the lastness department would be ‘wrist-ankle bondage.” Because most fashions are about clothes, which generally allows you to move fairly easily, and wrist-ankle ties, although allowing more freedom of movement than many other forms of bondage, definitely inhibits walking, in fact, it kind prevents walking.

Wrist-ankle bondage done right. Note that in this case, unlike the one in the fashion bondage photo, the wrists are secured right to the ankles, forcing the bondagette to spread her legs. Not very fashionable.
Of course, the fashion bondage is not all THAT bondage-y because the links between the wrists and the ankles are long coiled cords that don’t actually inhibit the wearer’s ability to move very much. Then again, fashion isn’t ABOUT getting bondage right, it’s about making sly references to it in something you might conceivably wear in public if you are the sort of person who buys that crap. I mean, if you are fashion-forward.

Wrist-ankle bondage is a favorite of mine because it allows more motion for the bondagette, and it allows you to sex her sunny-side up or sunny-side down, without doing any untying and retying.
